THE NEW TASTY CHICKENLESS TACO

El Pollo Loco is helping veganism go mainstream. More menus make way for meal options that appeal to vegans and vegetarians. As this lifestyle trends upward, El Pollo Loco introduces a tasty taco that has got you covered.

The new Chickenless Pollo Taco is made with 100% non-GMO soy protein which is the substitute for their signature chicken. The protein is simmered with fire roasted peppers, onions and tomatoes. It comes in a yellow tortilla made of both corn and flour. The taco is topped with queso fresco, lettuce and a slice of avocado.

A vegan meal is not as budget friendly when compared to their newer $5 combos. The cost of one Chickenless Taco is $3.19 for a grand total of $3.44 with California tax. Eating healthier overall just so happens to be pricier.

My first though when I see my food is that it looks like a quality taco. Without fully inspecting the taco, I could visibly see cheese, sauce and lettuce on a golden tortilla. The tortilla is thick, yellow and almost looks handmade. The queso fresco is moist, it crumbles and surprisingly not the shredded type. The meat was hardly detectable as it was covered in sauce. The avocado also hid among the lettuce and so the taco appeared simple.

When I bit into the taco a pronounced flavor of fire roasted tomatoes hit my palate. What I thought was a salsa topping is actually part of the protein. It is not spicy, it is flavorful! The protein was very good as it was moist and fully coated. The taco overall, is juicy! If I had to point out a negative, it would be that the lettuce tastes like the pre-shredded packaged type. However, I would purchase this taco again.
